How social media is contributing to the crisis:
Digital Addiction: Social media apps are designed to release dopamine, creating an addictive feedback loop. This can leave users in a "dopamine-deficit state" when not online, contributing to depression and anxiety.
Spending more than three hours a day on social media doubles the risk of mental health problems like anxiety and depression in adolescents.
Research has shown that reducing social media use may have the opposite effect. One study found that college students who limited social media use for three weeks showed significantly reduced loneliness and depression compared to those with unlimited use.
What can we do about it?
Promoting Literac:y: If people knew the harmful impact of digital dependency, they would better understand their condition.
Improve Online Habits: Moderation is key. It's important to remind yourself, and others, to unplug every now and then.
Self-Care: Take breaks, go outside, exercise, read, and prioritize sleep.
Mindfulness: Meditating, practicing gratitude, and other relaxation techniques can help reduce anxiety and stress.
